Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?
Updated October 11, 2026 · General information, not a substitute for an on-site diagnosis.
Short answer: A breaker trips to protect the wiring: usually because the circuit is overloaded, there's a short circuit, a ground fault is detected, or the breaker itself is wearing out. Overloads are often fixable by moving appliances; anything that trips instantly or repeatedly needs an electrician.

The four usual causes
- Overload: too much running on one circuit, such as a space heater, microwave and toaster together. Trips after a few seconds or minutes.
- Short circuit: a hot wire touching neutral or ground. Trips instantly, sometimes with a pop or scorch mark.
- Ground fault: current leaking to ground, often moisture outdoors, in a garage or at the pool. Trips GFCI outlets or GFCI breakers.
- Worn or faulty breaker: old breakers can trip under normal loads or feel warm.
What to check safely
- Unplug everything on that circuit, then reset the breaker once (fully off, then on).
- Plug items back in one at a time. If one item trips it every time, that appliance is the likely problem.
- If it trips with nothing plugged in, stop. That points to wiring or the breaker.
- For outdoor or garage circuits, look for wet outlets, damaged covers or sprinkler spray.
When to call an electrician
Call if the breaker trips immediately on reset, if it's warm or smells hot, if you see scorch marks, if it happens across several circuits, or if it started after adding an appliance like an EV charger or spa. Repeated tripping can also mean the home needs more capacity. See panel upgrades and breaker replacement.
Arizona-specific triggers
Summer AC loads, garage refrigerators and freezers in extreme heat, pool pumps, and monsoon moisture in outdoor outlets are the most common seasonal causes in Maricopa homes.
