Level 2 EV charger mounted on a garage wall in a Maricopa home

Short answer: Installing a Level 2 EV charger at home means adding a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized to the charger, and sometimes upgrading the panel to make room for it. Call 602-835-5455 and we'll connect you with an independent contractor who installs home chargers in Maricopa.

Do I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?

Not always. The contractor should run a load calculation: your existing service size, AC system, range, dryer, pool and any other big loads, plus the new charger. If the numbers work, the charger gets its own circuit. If not, the options are a panel or service upgrade, a lower-amperage charger setting, or a load-management device that shares capacity.

Level 2 options

  • Hardwired charger (e.g. Tesla Wall Connector, most branded wall units): wired straight to a dedicated circuit. Allows higher charging speeds.
  • NEMA 14-50 outlet: a 240V outlet the car's mobile charger plugs into. Simple, but the outlet must be rated for continuous EV charging.
  • 240V outlet for garage tools: if you also want a welder or compressor, say so up front so the circuit is planned once.

Permit, inspection and utility

A new EV circuit needs a permit and inspection from the City of Maricopa (or Pinal County outside city limits). Confirm in writing that the contractor is pulling it. Ask your utility, typically ED3 in Maricopa, whether an EV rate plan or rebate is available; they change from time to time.

What it costs

Cost depends mostly on the distance from the panel to the charger location, the circuit size, whether the panel needs work and whether the wire runs through finished walls or the attic. A short run beside the panel costs far less than a long run across the garage ceiling. The charger hardware is usually separate. The federal 30C home charger tax credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026.

Questions to ask the contractor

  • What circuit size and breaker will you use, and why?
  • Did you do a load calculation, and can I see it?
  • Who is pulling the permit?
  • Does the quote include the charger, or just installation?
  • Where will the wire run, and will there be drywall or stucco repair?

Frequently asked questions

How long does EV charger installation take?

A straightforward garage install is often done in half a day. Panel upgrades or long wire runs take longer, and permit timing can add days.

Can I plug my EV into a regular outlet?

Yes, using Level 1 (120V) charging, but it adds only a few miles of range per hour. A Level 2 circuit is much faster.

Do you install Tesla Wall Connectors?

Independent contractors in our network install Tesla Wall Connectors and other Level 2 chargers. Platinum Electricians Maricopa connects you with them; we don't do the installation.
