Why Are My Lights Flickering?
Updated October 11, 2026 · General information, not a substitute for an on-site diagnosis.
Short answer: Lights usually flicker because of a loose bulb, an LED bulb that doesn't match its dimmer, a large appliance starting up on the same circuit, or a loose connection somewhere in the wiring. The first two are easy fixes; the last one is a safety issue that needs an electrician.

Quick answer: what's causing it?
| What you notice | Likely cause | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| One bulb flickers | Loose or failing bulb | Low |
| LEDs flicker only when dimmed | Dimmer not LED-compatible | Low |
| Lights dip when AC or a big appliance starts | Normal inrush, or an overloaded/loose circuit | Medium if it's severe |
| One room or circuit flickers | Loose connection in a switch, outlet or fixture | High |
| Whole house flickers | Loose service connection, panel problem or utility issue | High |
What you can check yourself
- Turn the light off and let the bulb cool. Tighten it, or swap in a bulb you know works.
- If it's an LED on a dimmer, check the dimmer is rated for LEDs. If not, replace it with one that is.
- Notice whether flicker lines up with the AC, dryer or pool pump starting.
- Ask neighbors if their lights are flickering too. If so, call your utility (ED3 in most of Maricopa).
When flickering is a safety problem
Call an electrician if flickering affects a whole room or the whole house, if you hear buzzing or crackling from switches or outlets, if anything feels warm or smells like burning, or if it started after storm damage. Loose connections can overheat. If there's heat or a burning smell, treat it as an emergency and turn off the breaker.
Why it's common in Arizona summers
When the AC compressor starts it draws a short burst of high current. A small, brief dip is normal. A strong dip, or one that's getting worse, can point to a weak connection at the panel or the service, or to an AC system that needs attention. Monsoon storms can also leave damaged connections behind.

Frequently asked questions
Are flickering lights dangerous?
A single flickering bulb usually isn't. Flickering across a room or the whole house can mean a loose connection, which can overheat; get it checked.
Why do my LED lights flicker when they're off?
Some LEDs glow or flicker faintly when switched off because of small leakage currents from illuminated or smart switches. A different bulb or switch usually fixes it.
